Leyak

(Bulya)

Basic Information

In the Thousand Islands, the Leyak ((le-ak)—the Y is not written or spoken) is a terrifying figure in the form of flying head with entrails (heart, lungs, liver etc) still attached. Leyak is said to fly trying to find a pregnant woman in order to suck her baby's blood or a newborn child.

Leyaks are created when Humans* who are practicing black magic and have cannabalistic behavior die. They worship 'the queen of Leyak', a widow-witch demon-god named Rangda, who plays a prominent role in local rituals. A mask in her likeness is kept in the village death temple and during her temple festivals, she is paraded. Besides leyaks, other demons are said to be the followers of Rangda.

Leyak are said to haunt graveyards, feed on corpses, have power to change themselves into animals, such as pigs, and fly.

In daily life, islanders sometimes attribute certain illness or deaths to leyaks. A balian ( traditional healer) will conduct a seance to identify with witchcraft who is responsible for the death. During the seance, the spirit of the dead will directly or indirectly point to his/her attacker. However, vengeance by the victim's relatives or family is usually counseled against, and people are advised to leave any action to the spirits themselves. Hence, the suspicions and fears of the family and relatives are confirmed, but revenge upon the leyak is discouraged by the healers, as the creatures power dwarfs that of most villages.

Appearance

In their nocturnal Leyak form, they are said to have an unusually long tongue and large fangs. In daylight they appear as an ordinary human, but at night their head and entrails break loose from their body and fly. Leyak statues (a head with a very long tongue and sharp fangs) are sometimes hung on a wall for house decoration.

Special Abilities

Leyak gain the ability to fly as a ChonChon* does; but must find somewhere to store their insensate body.

Leyak can shapeshift as Vampires* do into pigs and dogs.

Leyak are often Sorcerers* or Elementalists* before their death and they keep all spell casting abilities.

Geographical Distribution

Leyak are common throughout the Thousand Islands including southernmost parts of Khitai* and adjacent areas.

Average Statistics

Leyak use the stat adjustments for Vampires* in their normal forms.

In Flying form their stats do not change as all their 'life' energy flows into the head and viscera( which can be used as hands to strangle or wield weapons or objects. Their movement rate becomes as a ChonChon* and they add +2 EVASION and DEFENCE because of their smaller size and greater speed.

Further Notes

Leyak are affected by all items, rituals etc. which normally affect Undead*.
