Lion

(Tom Clare)

Those passing through the thick wildwood of Ellesland still sometimes encounter the forest lions of ancient times. These stealthy beasts are usually solitary hunters, but they occasionally form prides of two or three in order to bring down large prey such as the boar or the white deer. A sole lion prefers to lie in ambush for smaller quarry.

Rumours of a lion in the vicinity will attract half the knights in the district; hunting and slaying such a legendary creature can make a young man’s reputation.

Enterprising peasants sometimes try to capture lion cubs to sell to the gentry – they are popular as heraldic mascots – but such pets never quite lose their savagery.
